Trans Like Me
I really enjoyed this talk for several reasons. Firstly, the session was conducted in more of a talk show style with Katie-John hosting and asking questions to the author in the spotlight, CN Lester. Their conversation was free flowing and natural like two friends meeting up for a very intellectually stimulating coffee (in a tent full of eager listeners!).
The subjects of transgender and trans sexuality has dominated headlines in the recent months and it was really intetesting for me (someone who is not super familiar or clued up about the debate) not only to hear about one individual’s exoerience as a trans person and their struggles but also to have them clarify some of the common misconceptions and misunderstandings that often present themselves when this nature of topic is discussed.
For example, I really admired the way in which both speakers laid down their preferences upon how they would like to be referred to. CN answers to ‘they’ and gave a fantastically succint and solid explanation as to why that was using their knowledge of pre 20th Century grammar as well as a very honest disclosure about feeling niether he nor she.
KJ explained that Norwich has one of the most prominent and wide ranging support networks for the LGBT/Trans communities in the country. The atmosphere in the tent was one of agreement and interest which made me feel really proud to be part of a community like Norwich where people are liberated and able to be who they feel they are in whatever format that may be.
A lovely and eye opening start to a Saturday morning.
