Priscilla Queen of the Desert @ Theatre Royal
Cocks in frocks that rock
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is making a glitzy stop in Norwich, but don’t ask be how the deceptively dull tin camper with a fabulously fun interior has wandered so far off course. Just go with her journey from gay capital of the world Sydney to the-middle-of-nowhere-why-is-there-a-casino-here Alice Springs, and brave the bush because it’s a spectacular ride. Damn good drag queen Mitzi Matosis, played by Jason Donovan is offered a new show and a chance to reconnect with his young son. Recently widowed and wounded transsexual Bernadette Bassenger, played by Simon Green has nothing to lose after burying the memory of her toyboy husband Trumpet, a 24 year old bombshell, who met his demise asphyxiating on his beautifying peroxide fumes. The diva drag with claws Felicia, played by Adam Bailey, is in pursuit of the perfect performance – Kylie’s greatest hits at the peak of Ayers Rock. We joined the three of them, belting out their songs making their cross country journey to their new show. It takes a while to get over the initial shock, that soon develops into hilarity, of the sight of Jason Donovan dressed up to the nines and doing his bean flicking impersonation. All the glamour of Priscilla will hit you right in that sweet spot, with a fantastic live orchestra, amazing animatronics, 500 fabulous costumes, 200 top hats, 100 crazy wigs, 150 pairs of to die for (or die in) shoes and great songs to sing along to. This is just what Norwich needs, more cocks in frocks that rock.
