Craig david
Setting off from Norwich with half a tank of petrol and a friend, we were bound for a Newmarket night and rewinding back to the naughties with Craig David. Getting into Newmarket the town seemed eerily quiet, especially for a location hosting the king of RnB. Taking a turning into the Newmarket Racecourse, somehow there were even less signs of life. Luckily we weren’t the only pair confused by the lack of people at the racecourse. There had been zero radio announcements that day about a zombie apocalypse, so we stopped to discuss our bewilderment with the other pair. After checking the address on the tickets and making some phone calls, it turned out that we were all at the completely wrong racecourse, but thankfully not too far away from where we should be to join the revelries.
After the long ride from Norwich to Newmarket with our minor detour, it was time to hit a bar for some much needed refreshments, and being in such fancy surroundings we’d have looked pretty silly drinking anything other than Prosecco. That being said, if you’re gonna be buying the fancy sparkling stuff round these ends, you might as well go all out on a bottle rather than just a borrowers flute. So in the heat of the moment we did just that and went all out. I’m currently in the process of remortgaging - however I am now the owner of a super posh Prosecco ice bag, which I’m certain will come in handy after I have to sell my kidneys on the black market. Getting swept away with the joys of finally reaching our party destination and the Prosecco purchase, it wasn’t long before we got caught up in the thrill of races. Placing some bets, all our money was soon swept away also with nothing returned but laughs.
Before we knew it all the horses had hit the hay and it was time to party. Making our way to a decent spot to view Craig David live in the moment, instantly looked like a mission impossible for us pint sized pair in the heaving crowd of hot bodies on a cool night. Amazingly I bumped into an old uni friend whose face hadn’t been seen in some six years - after a quick catch up with my friend our minds were made up and we waded out of the ever-growing masses to the circular trackside bar in hopes of a better view and spot in general. The new comfortably raised view wasn’t a let down in the slightest, as now we could entirely see the Southampton Angel dressed in all white head to toe surrounded by the stage glow. Soon the sounds of the naughties sprang to mind with Fill Me In, 7 Days as well as Walking Away whilst muscle memory also kicked in putting a spring in our steps. Not only being the king of RnB, Craig David also wears the crown of being king of 'the great rise and fall and rise again over a decade and half after he burst into the charts'. With this re-rise comes a different sound all be it with that familiar upbeat harmony old fans relish to relive while also aweing a new generation of audiences. The newer tracks like Nothing Like This, When The Baseline Drops and Ain’t Giving Up were interwoven with those of a more classic nature, and this nearly 20 year career was immense to see and hear. Then just as the groovers and ravers thought we’d been given all we needed from the white hot David, he went and pulled out a bloody banger with a mash up of Where Are You Now and 7 Days, which was obviously nothing short of amazing. Ninety minutes went by in a flash of dancing to memories old and recent, and the flash was fantastic.
