Charity Kase

You can always count on the Drag Community to bring wonder, humility, sparkle and surprise to your Saturday night! 'Something Fab Productions' did all that and more this weekend at the Maddermarket with a showcase of both budding and seasoned local Drag talent in support of the incredible heavyweight headliner (fresh from Ru Paul's Drag Race Season 3) the one, the only otherworldly being known as Charity Kase.

Our hostess with the mostess 'Holly Something' commanded the stage throughout the show, introducing the acts and showing so much love support and kindness for those artists new on the scene making their debuts. The atmosphere was all inclusive, celebratory and loving from beginning to end and it was so much fun to become immersed in the music and performances. Scheduled acts interspersed with impromptu lip syncs from audience members made for a variety of entertainment; the crowd were fully engrossed in all the battles but it was clear that there was no shade being thrown and everyone taking part got credit where credit was due. How refreshing, right?!

How do I begin to describe the headline performances? The first; a nod to Mean Girls cross with The Scarecrow in an oversized clown-esq crown wrapped up in a jewel encrusted pink silk corset. The second; a mermaid sparkle pirarana fish strip tease which went from 0-60 very quickly indeed! What I loved about both of Charity Kase's performances was the vulnerability of their truest self shining through- I love how this performer gives zero fucks about how they might be portrayed whilst simultaneously paying such acute attention to aesthetic detail. I was fortunate to say a quick hello to Charity at the meet and greet before the show, they were all smiles, seeming 10feet tall in all her glory but remaining firmly grounded, grateful and humble. When I thanked her for having me at the show she replied warnly, "Oh no, not at all, thank YOU Norwich for having me- I'm so excited to be here!"

What a gorgeous human! More of this please Maddermarket! Oh? What's that you say? Something Fab brings us A Night at the Musicals with Veronica Green (RPDR season 2&3!) next month? Put it in your calendars Norwich Drag fans- 25/6/22!
