As You Like It by The Handlebards
I can honestly say I have never seen Shakespeare performed in such a way as this- the Handlebard ladies are truly unique and absolutely raucous! Their delivery was absolutely superb; I loved how eloquent and versatile each actress was, each one played at least four different characters in the play and at times they were swapping hats and moustaches during the same scene which added to the hilarity and brilliance of it all!
At the last minute the performance was moved from The Arts Centre to The Whiffler Theatre at the foot of Norwich Castle; it couldn't have been staged better! The evening was warm, the sky turned pink and with the castle as the backdrop, surrounded by trees the Forest of Arden really came to life (albeit with the odd interjection from a local park dwelling drinker - which the group improvised and negotiated around like absolute pros!)
This group cycle the length and breadth of the country carrying all of their costumes, set and equipment with them on their backs or in trailers. A 15 mile bike ride from Bungay to Norwich is enough of an achievement without pouring all your heart, soul and energy into a full length Shakespearean extravaganza! The Handlebards pulled it off with such flare and charisma; the audience were so invested in the characters, the plot and all the hilarious added extras and breaking of the third wall that came with it.
I can wholeheartedly recommend a performance by this group and their male counterparts who I believe are also on tour at the moment. Professional, hysterical, outrageous with limitless creativity and energy.
