Will Self: Phone
Will Self , the well known writer, journalist and political commentator appeared at the Norwich Playhouse as part of the Norfolk and Norwich festival's City Of Literature season to discuss his new book Phone, the third part of a trilogy which started with Umbrella then Shark.
The evening started with Will being interviewed on stage by Chris Gribble, the chief executive of the Writers Centre. They discussed his new book which is the story of how society is dependent on technology and how we have changed the way information is accessed and delivered to us mixed in with post-war Iraq, with the main character being an MI6 agent. Will treated the audience to a couple of chapters from what sounds like a very complex and ‘wordy’ novel - people who are familiar with Wills' earlier works will be all to familiar on how he uses the English language to its full extent - I'll be honest, personally I was struggling to follow some of what was said!
During the evening Will also discussed some current topics taking a few swipes at TB (Tony Blair to you and me), commenting on the upcoming election and his thoughts on the candidates. The evening concluded with a short Q&A session where Will took some questions from the audience when once again Tony Blair was discussed.
A very interesting evening, the almost full to capacity crowd were glued and entertained by Will's razor sharp wit and sometime humorous observations on society on where we are and where we're all going.
