October DVD's
October 3rd - Alice Through the Looking Glass
The only reason that this film is less disappointing than the first is that no-one expected the first to be as bad as it was, while everyone was expecting this to be shite. As it happens, it’s technically proficient shite with some spirited performances, but it’s shite nonetheless.
October 10th- Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle: Series 4
Lee’s exemplary stand-up is brave, deft, multi-layered, and very very funny. If you need any convincing, take a look at this latest, and apparently last, series of his multi-award-winning BBC show. Alternatively, the film version of Warcraft is released on the same day, you know, for kids.
October 17th - Preacher: Season 1
To my mind, one of the most criminally under-watched and overlooked TV shows of the past year (along with The Leftovers). Writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon’s cult comic book series is faithfully and affectionately realized on the small screen through pitch-perfect performances and extraordinary cinematography. It’s an absolute hoot, too.
October 31st - The Neon Demon
Nicolas Winding Refn’s dazzling/baffling, brilliant/pretentious, and disturbing/disgusting modern fairytale divided critics, but we here at Outline Towers thoroughly enjoyed it. Part-David Lynch, part-David Cronenberg, and utterly - if oddly - compelling. Contains probably the best lesbian necrophilia scene I’ve ever watched, too.
