Casstonbury - A Benefit for Mind in loving memory of Tristan Cass
This unique event was bitter sweet in terms of content and purpose. Nowadays, those who suffer from mental illnesses such as depression or chronic anxiety are not made to suffer in silence and are not dismissed when they voice their concerns. Charities like Mind are a key reason as to why we now live in a kinder, more understanding reality. People have better access to support and do not feel so afraid to talk about mental health and wellbeing as maybe they were 10 years ago.
Sadly Mr Cass, who was the technical manager at Norwich Playhouse lost his battle with depression in 2013; the reason for some of his closest friends, family and colleagues rallying together to organise a night of cabaret, comedy, storytelling and music in his memory. It was something incredibly special and moving indeed.
The audience was really warm and fun loving, and there was a lovely atmosphere of liveliness and support. The compere Tom Allen was brilliant, his wit was acerbic but friendly and very funny. The cabaret style songs from Regina and Gill Dean were sensationally entertaining and Margaret Thatcher dazzled as usual with her hilarious game show and perfect hair. I particularly enjoyed the lesser known storyteller Shey Hargreaves who gave a unique and charming performance. Pat Cahill turned out in his Morris dancing costume and sang a song about coconuts, which caused great uproar and amusement amongst the onlookers. Finally, the cast of Into the Woods sang a moving rendition of No One Is Alone which was a really beautiful moment for all.
A really successful night of great entertainment for a worthy cause.
