Blood Red Shoes & Wet Nuns, Arts Centre // 21.01.2013
Cracking gig by great bands. Shame about the stage divers.
Two bands, both intense but very different.
Between songs, Wet Nuns were not as amusing as their previous visit to NAC but the music more intense. “Why You So Cold?” and “Throttle” were awesome, in the true meaning. Rob’s guitar consists, in the main, of metal riffing but adds welcome colour with touches of no wave, shoegaze, surf, punk and Chicago electric blues. Alexis’ drumming defies description. Catch ‘em at NAC on 2nd March.
Blood Red Shoes have been around for a while yet I know next to nothing about them. Whilst the music’s firmly influenced by grunge/ alt-rock, there is more to it than the PIxies/Nirvana hybrid reports suggested. Laura-Mary's vocals are a combo of Julianne Regan (All About Eve) and Emma Pollock (Delgados) whilst Steven’s are Win Butler-meets-Elvis Costello. The songwriting is cracking and I’ll be keeping an eye on this lot, albeit that their next gig in Norwich will surely be a bigger venue.
Complaint. In the 80s, I saw hardcore bands like Napalm Death. Stage diving was de rigueur. People would dive off stage quickly, without interfering with band or equipment. Tonight, Laura-Mary nearly got smacked in the face with a mic, FX were trampled on, guitars knocked out of tune and some narcissistic dick stood centre stage taking pictures of himself on his smartphone. Have some respect for the band and for the audience.
