LANDE HEKT, APHRA & BORE JOYSEY

Another excellent evening at the Holloway.

LANDE HEKT, APHRA & BORE JOYSEY

It is Saturday night and the Holloway is calling, again, for one of the venue’s gentler and more relaxing evenings.

Although I have seen at least three of the five members of BORE JOYSEY in other bands, this was their debut performance as a band. To be honest, the fact that it was their debut show together did show but they’ve got some very good songs and played some enjoyable indie/folk. A band that I am looking forward to seeing them again.

I have been a fan of APHRA for a good number of years, having seen Aphra (the person) playing solo and fronting a relatively conventional guitar-bass-drums band. The still relatively new three piece line-up of Aphra (the band) - featuring 2 acoustic guitars, sax and some gorgeous harmony vocals - gets better every time I see them. This is surely the best showcase for the songwriting talents of Aphra (the person) yet and I for one am very much looking forward to the album which is due in October.

Formerly of Muncie Girls, LANDE HEKT performed solo, singing over electric guitar which, on one song, she live-looped. Her melancholy guitar pop may not be the most original but she writes cracking songs and has a great voice, charisma, presence and charm. The between song chat is entertaining, amusing and self-effacing. Excellent stuff indeed.
