Night Engine, Keep Up, There's Someone In The Pond & The Rumble // OPEN, 02.06.14
First up is young trio, The Rumble. Someone has been raiding their parents' record collection; this is Feelgood influenced pubrock. Oli is supremely confident as singing guitarist, ably supported by drummer Charlie and Ben on bass. Not the finished article but fine playing and song-writing. (7/10)
I’ve been raving on about There's Someone In The Pond since their first gig. This is proper garage rawk at its most primal. With the likes of "Do The Crab", Fliss, Thomas, and Jack are simply superb. (9/10)
Last time I saw Keep Up I just didn't get it. Tonight didn’t win me over but I’m starting to appreciate the four piece's anthemic Simple Minds and Aztec Camera with the Mumfords providing the choruses indie rock. "Nazareth" may hint at "Walk On The Wildside" but I am growing to like it and "Wishbone". (7/10)
Night Engine are another band I previously didn't get. The "Berlin" Bowie and Reed meets Talking Heads thing just seemed too contrived. Putting nary a foot wrong tonight, Phil, Dom, Ed and Lee proved this doubter wrong with a set of rocked up funk. This lot will be big and I’m looking forward to seeing sold out crowds chanting along to "i'll Make It Worth Your While". (9/10)
