Gladboy
Gladboy are an exciting prospect, each individual member bringing something unique and valuable to the mix
Like a number of others from the Sonic Youths family Gladboy have a new EP - Egopushin' - to unleash upon us with a big Halloween launch party at the Waterfront Studio with plenty of balloons and no less than three support acts in the form of Strip Mall, Bull, and the particularly memorable Bag of Cans who were a riot of fun.
This being Norwich, even on a Monday night there were gig-clashes with recent Q award winners Goat Girl performing at the Arts Centre but my attention was always focussed on this one and I certainly didn't regret my decision to be here. Gladboy were a trio when I first saw them but are now a five-piece (and briefly a sextet on the night when they were joined for a few songs by a guest trombonist in a nice moment of spontaneity typical of the night) and although they seemed to arrive fully-formed last year their sound continues to develop, no two gigs I have seen have been the same. This one had a real party, celebratory atmosphere and a superb, enthusiastic crowd with a young demographic on the whole, the Studio being near enough full too. This was quite a party for a Monday!
There was a limited edition of 50 physical CDs for the EP, each one with its own individual photo and almost all of which were snapped up on the night.
Gladboy are an exciting prospect, each individual member bringing something unique and valuable to the mix and with some impressive reference points of influence. There's a thrilling new wave of emerging artists locally at the moment and Gladboy are one of those heading that charge who are doing something fresh, fun, vibrant and exciting.
