BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Black History Month is upon us once more as October rolls into view. The month is a capture-all for a variety of diverse events across the region, celebrating Black Excellence in Norfolk. Norfolk’s libraries play host to a wealth of these events, ranging from a Rap Workshop and Performance Poetry Event featuring the exceptional performance poet, Kenny Baraka at Cromer Library from 7:30-9:30pm, to talks at the Millennium Library in the Forum, Norwich.

One of these such talks is ‘Pablo Fanque, Artiste of Colour’, on Sat October 15th. The talk joins community librarian Clive Wilkins-Jones on a journey to learn more about Norwich born Pablo Fanque, the first black circus owner in England. The Millennium Library also hosts ‘Chasin’ that Devil Music’ on Weds 19th October at 6:30pm: community Librarian Nick Little explores the influence of black music on the post-war generation. Take a musical journey through US Army and Airforce bases, the docks of London and Liverpool, and the record collections of John Mayall, The Beatles, The Who, the Rolling Stones (and many more) to find out why blues, jazz and soul is so important to the history of British pop culture.
