Swim Deep
Bouncing into the Waterfront Studio, Swim Deep unleash their indie pop goodness with a run through their debut album which happens to be ten years old.
Yes a full decade has passed since the bands debut album “Where The Heaven Are We” hit the airwaves and I’m pleased to say it has aged like a very fine wine.
The Birmingham based band blast through the record, it remains full of grungy, indie goodness but it gets lifted to another level when being played live. ‘King City’ has that Stone Roses vibe that many, many bands have tried to reach and failed yet Swim Deep get it spot on.
‘Make My Sun Shine’ breezes through the studio with that beautiful bass intro, the audience nodding in major approval. Equally wonderful is ‘Colour Your Ways’ a song Brandon Flowers would have killed to write.
‘Red Lips I Know’ rolls along like a close relative to The Charlatans, lead singer Austin Williams has the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand, intact the whole band definitely know how to work the fans, they’ve honed their craft superbly.
The piano led ‘Soul Trippin’ is another highlight. Those around me certainly knew the words and respectfully sang along, once the full band kicked it the song took flight and it was a genuinely beautiful moment.
It’s fair the say the boys from Brum have an abundance of belief in their music and the songs definitely back that up.
We lean into Grunge, Shoegaze and occasionally Brit-pop throughout their set. Yes the influences are clear but there’s individuality to their performance too and that’s what makes them great and what makes their set work.
Swim Deep totally deserve the accolades that have been coming their way. They’ve worked extremely hard to bring their music to an audience that love and appreciate their work. Here’s to the next decade, I wish them all the very best.
