Skarlett Riot - Invicta

Skarlett Riot - Invicta

Now I will say right now, I’m familiar with this band, and I’ve been a bit of a fan for quite some time, but even I have to admit I had a sense of wtf? The band used to fit into the same vein as Paramore and the like, but this? It’s so far removed from that, it’s unreal. This isn’t so much an evolution it’s more of a mutation.

The band have taken a much heavier approach to the new album, and it’s so far removed from previous albums it’s unreal. They’ve even injected some metal roars. It’s honestly like listening to a completely different band. This is most definitely one of those albums that will alienate some of the existing fans, whilst gaining new ones.

That said, it’s a stunning album, even if it did completely take me off guard. Skarlett’s vocals have matured, and are a great deal more powerful, made even more prominent in the mixing. I’m not often lost for words, but I have to say that I was taken by surprise (pleasantly). This album is just a slab of steel reinforced concrete. It’s hard, heavy and will crush anyone that stands in its way. Personally I am in awe of what they’ve achieved with this album, and I really cannot wait until I can see a live performance, because these songs will be incredible…. I might be too old for a mosh pit, but I’ll give it a go.

10/10
