Shy FX Live
As the night ended, what lingered was Shy FX’s enduring ability to constantly regenerate the dnb and jungle scene, keeping alive a sound that resonates deeply with both original ravers and newer generations alike
Andre Williams is a British DJ and music producer from London who began his career in the height of the early 1990s electronic dance music scene. Specialising in jungle and drum and bass, Williams became better known as Shy FX following the release of his debut record, “Jungle Love” in 1992 under the Permission to Dance label. His later switch to Sound of the Underground Records saw his career begin to skyrocket, as soon after he released his breakthrough track “Original Nuttah” in collaboration with UK Apache in 1994. “Original Nuttah” is a song that gained traction in the UK rave scene of the 90s but has remained timeless in its ability to invigorate crowds with its ragga-jungle energy.
On Friday night, Shy FX returned to Norwich’s Waterfront for another night of great tunes. The Waterfront was the perfect choice of venue for this event, its intimate feel pairing well with the DJ's immersive, cosmic sound. The venue’s natural acoustics complimented the punchy basslines, allowing the sound to reverberate through the room and fully absorb the crowd. The visual effects are always spot on with Shy FX. There's no sense of over-polished production, but rather a paired back approach that delivers the perfect strobe at exactly the right time, neither overwhelming nor taking away from the sound.
Williams has an undeniable presence behind the decks that speaks for itself after decades in the scene. MC Rage joined him in Norwich, providing an overlay that held the crowd in call and response, adding energy to the set and invigorating the evening's tracks with timeless hype work. Shy FX has his pacing nailed, knowing exactly when to tease a rewind that will keep his crowd moving, a careful art that’s revealing of his time in the industry. His mixes unfailingly strike the perfect balance between old- school rave nostalgia and refreshingly current influences, something that’s reflected in his diverse audiences.
As the night drew to a close, what remained clear was Shy FX’s enduring ability to constantly regenerate the DnB and jungle scene, keeping alive a sound that resonates deeply with both original ravers and newer generations alike.
