Rope Store @ NAC
Three great acts.
I must admit, I arrived at NAC a few minutes late on Saturday, and missed the very beginning of Mr David Viner’s set (sorry!). I was soon kicking myself for my tardiness, as what I at first took to be a quiet, slightly mumbly singer songwriter turned out to be an acoustic act unlike most I’ve seen. Charming, sinister, aloof and endearingly creepy, Mr David Viner spins dark yarns with a comic twist, told over the gentle meanderings of quintessential English folk music.
Superglu have been getting a lot of hype recently, so I was intrigued to see if they could live up to the press. Within five minutes of them taking to the stage they had, of course, blown myself and everyone else away with their energetic, raucous and fervently catchy tunes. They teeter on the edge of madness and straddle the line between pop, indie, rock and God knows what. Seriously, go and see them.
Last up were the mighty Rope Store, a band I’ve been meaning to see for ages but somehow kept missing. It’s really hard to sum up a band that at any time throughout the evening consisted of between 8 and 11 members, playing songs that are so intricate, with so many different moving parts all working together to form one huge wall of sound, like a gigantic musical machine that churns out tune after tune after tune. It’s incredible, emotive, catchy, groovy, dancy, toe tapping wonderment and I just wish I’d seen them sooner.
