Roddy Woomble

Roddy Woomble

Idlewild frontman Roddy Woomble is in town this evening touring with his debut solo album My Secret Is My Silence on this it’s tenth birthday. It doesn’t seem like five minutes ago since we saw him originally touring with this fine, well celebrated cult album. It is rich in big landscape sky craper songs that are inspired by the Outer Hebrides where Woomble lives these days.

His regular youthful band are just so amazingly talented and such fine gifted musicians, it’s just perfection. Woomble regularly stands back when he is off vocal duty to admire and listen intently to every single beat and note; you sense that this unit are extremely well rehearsed for the tour and that he is something of a perfectionist. His band don’t disappoint the crowd and I am sure will not have disappointed him either.

Much to my delight, they glide through the album in the same running order that it was recorded. He engages with the audience throughout the show and informs us that Waverley Steps is oddly enough about the Waverley steps at Edinburgh train station that have now sadly been replaced by an escalator! He is such a humbly cool, charismatic and engaging front man.

It has been a quite beautiful evening and a reminder of just what a fine album this is. Just seeing Woomble and his band in motion this evening is pure poetry in motion.
