The Neutrinos & Birds of Hell

The Neutrinos & Birds of Hell

We thought we would take a look at the upcoming gig of two well loved local bands, The Neutrinos and Birds of Hell, ahead of their gig at Norwich Arts Centre on December 12th.What a way to celebrate the General Election

After two decades of innovation and creativity, two sets of Norfolk musicians are returning to the city this month for a very special concert. The Neutrinos and Birds of Hell will perform individual sets as well as some unique one-off collaborations.

For art-rock mavericks The Neutrinos, the show will announce the pre-release of their new single Pulse Addict, to be released 14 February, advance 12 inch copies will be available to buy on the night.

Celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, The Neutrinos’ irrepressibly adventurous nature has led them to perform on boats, in complete darkness at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, in a former London horse hospital, an Essex bus depot, a disused small animal hospital in Edinburgh, a former Inland Revenue Office and a vast furniture depository. They have made appearances around Europe, at the Bloomsbury Festival and the Festival of Love in London, Manchester/Liverpool’s In The City music convention, North by North East, Toronto, Exit Festival in Serbia, as well as Norfolk & Norwich Festival. They have recorded in Berlin’s legendary Funkhaus and their music has been used for underground film soundtracks and throughout the feature length Channel 4 documentary The Trials of Amanda Knox.

Around the UK The Neutrinos are perhaps best known for their groundbreaking, site responsive KlangHaus collaboration with artist Sal Pittman. Described as ‘the most innovative presentation of live music I’ve ever seen’ by The Guardian and as 'A blast of aural and visual magic’ in a five-star review in The Times review, KlangHaus debuted in a month-long run at the Edinburgh Festival.   Transferred for two, site specific month long, sold out residencies at The Royal Festival Hall and to other venues around the country.

For very special guests Birds of Hell (BoH) the show marks the end of a really busy year. Initially conceived as a solo project by singer/songwriter Pete Murdoch, BoH has now expanded into an explosive four-piece band of shamanic experimentalists. Earlier this year they released their debut album and the memorable single Do I Get To Ride On A Unicorn?, which was accompanied by an epic video of pagan spirit animals dancing in the moonlight. Right from the beginning BoH have kept it carnal, their songs taking in topics from dogging to sniffing poppers and being eaten by snakes.

Neutrinos singer Karen Reilly said ‘This is a chance to see us not only share a bill with one of our kindred Norwich bands but also collaborate and share a stage. Neither band plays in the city as much as we’d like so we’re both really excited about this gig and working together to create something new.’

Pete Murdoch added ‘The Neutrinos are our pals; we’ve supported each other's weird endeavours from day one. After releasing our debut album and touring the UK, this hometown gig with The Neuts is a great end to 2019. We’ve got some brand-new unreleased songs and we’ve also been working on a live collaboration with the Neutrinos, it’s gonna be a special one!’

Of course, there is another event taking place on 12 December too. ‘We really hope everyone will cast their vote in the general election before coming to the gig’ said Karen ‘Our ancestors fought for our right to vote and doing a gig on election night is exciting as it’s at the cusp of possibilities of change’.
