Paul Kelly – Songs From The South (Dramatico)

Paul Kelly, one of Australia’s finest (cult country rock folk) singer songwriters of the last thirty years has personally selected some of his finest career moments here, some forty tracks in total to be precise and it is as by no means just a best of, it is also an introduction to his undisputed talents.

Kelly is an artist that has always had a keen lyrical eye for social comment back in his home Country and he is a fine proven story teller as his handpicked uncompromising back catalogue clearly demonstrates.

This headlines and highlights compilation also demonstrates Kelly’s versatility and ability to cross over into different musical genres when he feels the need or desire to do something different, demonstrated here by such a diverse range of style from ‘Something On My Mind’, ‘Love Is The Law’ and ’God Told Me Too’ to the more up-tempo rock numbers, through to the country folk numbers like, ‘Song Of The Old Rake’

There are some real gems to cherish here, like ‘God Told Me Too’, ‘Love Letter’, ‘You’re 39, you’re Beautiful’, ‘Leaps And Bounds’ and ‘Love Never Runs Ontime’.

‘Songs From The South’ is an engaging and uncompromising compilation. Collectively for the new listener, one disc would’ve been enough. However, the dedicated army of followers will be in their element will this collection I am sure.

He is a clear talent if indeed something of an underground one to the masses, but at the same time a true legend to those in the know, last year he sold out four consecutive nights at London’s very beautiful Bush Hall. No doubt those evenings were swelled by the huge amount of British based Aussies that are always in the capital and on this evidence I can see why.

So Neil Finn he is not, but Australia’s Billy Bragg he may well be? Whatever the opinion, this fine collection will ensure that the weather is always with him, wherever he goes.

From his home Country via ‘St Kilda To Kings Cross’ this well heeled troubadour is bound to get a warm reception.......Get your coat on, we are going out, just remember that something’s never run on time.
