Organised Rhyme

Organised Rhyme

Organised Rhyme: a creative event run by locals, for locals, featuring local performers. Naturally, I was sold, and went down to The Alley  to check out the open mic poetry and hip-hop showcase.

Firstly, the organisers picked a great location. The Alley is testament to Norwich’s independent creative scene. The artwork is vibrant, décor is unique – it’s just all very Norwich. Furthermore, the door to neighbouring independent gallery Moosey Art is always open.

The actual event took place in the gallery, and was full capacity. First up was an open mic poetry and spoken word session – an opportunity for any local poets to share their talents. Poetry ranged from the riotous, hip-hop influenced poetry of Jamie Townsend to the more morbid stylings of “dark mistress” Rosie P. Performing with confidence and professionalism, all poets thoroughly engaged the crowd. Heads bobbed to the more musical poems and impassioned cries were hollered at the political ones.

After a short break for drinks, we were treated to Macbeef – two scenes from Macbeth rewritten in rap. At some points it was clear that the piece was still being worked on, however it showed promise. A live drummer accompanied verses from two actors and a beautiful chorus from three Wyrd Sisters.

Organised rhyme saved the best until last: an open mic hip-hop cypher.  Chairs were pushed to the side of the room to form dancing space, and anyone could take the stage to partake in the rap battle. Jasen Daymond laid down incredible beats and we were treated to an incredible range of freestyles ranging from grime-influenced, old school hip-hop, and even one in the Spanish language.

Organised Rhyme will be taking place again next month, so if you like hip-hop, poetry or want to see something different, get yourself down to The Alley!
