Dog Is Dead- 'All our Favourite Stories' Atlantic Records
I’ve heard so much about Dog Is Dead. The five piece Nottingham nu-folk band have been praised and celebrated everywhere since their LP release, from being named ‘Main stage stars-in-waiting’ by NME to ‘solid gold indie pop songs ornamented with real precision and flair’ by The Guardian. Despite all this media hype, I hadn’t heard a single Dog Is Dead track. Or had I?Don’t get me wrong, this is good music. They make creative, catchy music; lyrically beautiful, perfect for a lazy summer festival sunday afternoon set. Dog is Dead even played Glockenspiel Song in an episode of Skins - “We are a mess, we are failures and we love it!” However, it’s nothing new. It genuinely hurts me to say it because the five-piece seem so lovely, so passionate in their interviews. But ‘All our Favourite Stories’ is nothing Mumford and Sons, Arcade Fire, Noah and the Whale and Alt-J haven’t conquered before. The nu-folk indie pop scene is now dominant in the music industry and unfortunately, Dog Is Dead are just churning out the same riffs, tune and basslines we hear everyday. If you’re into this genre of music, this album is definitely for you. It’s every indie folk pop fan’s wet dream. If you’re looking for something new and exciting however- and it kills me to say it- give it a miss.
