Bring Me The Horizon - That's The Spirit

This is the album which turned me into a Bring Me The Horizon fan - unfortunately, that might be exactly what turns off many of their current fans. That’s the Spirit sees Sheffield’s biggest rock band stepping away from the metal sound of their earlier releases, in favour of something which feels at home on the Radio 1 playlist. On song after song, the band insist that things are going to get better, and that’s particularly true of the danceable, hook-laden Happy Song. Frontman Ollie Sykes screams that everything will be just fine as long as we just sing along, and that’s the key to this hook-laden album. Also a highlight is lead single Drowned, an anthemic call-and-response which you could easily imagine drifting across a festival crowd. That’s good news, because Ollie Sykes has talked of the band’s ambition to headline Reading and Leeds in the future. With this album, that goal just got a whole lot more achievable, even as it risks alienates their hardcore fan-base. In their quest to reinvent themselves, it’ll be interesting to see where Bring Me The Horizon go next.
