Austerity Measures

Driving through Brandon, the small town near Thetford, a town centre, sprawling corner pub – once the focal point of the community, I can only imagine – sat boarded up. Redundant and lifeless, an architectural corpse, its only indication of previous life being the events board outside, which simply had the words ‘Gone Fishin’ roughly scrawled across it. It’s just one visual reference of our failing economy, and several artists have had their work compiled for an exhibition that will give us plenty more of these images.

‘Austerity Measures’ is an open submission photography exhibition on the theme: What single image reflects the compromises you have had to make due to the economic downturn? The photographs in this exhibition were submitted by artists in all stages of their careers, and represent either professional or personal compromises, or in some cases wider social issues.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 7 January-Saturday 4 February 2012 at the Norwich Arts Centre, and features work from Jenny Allison, Sabatin Bascoban, Damien van Carrapiett of www.iconicnorfolk.com, Ian Coldicott, Nisha Duggal, Jon Dunning, Alison Humphrey, Catherine Jacobs, Angela Malone, Paul Matosic (www.matosic.org.uk), Keith Osborn, Kelly Robb, Michael Szpakowski, Richard Trevellion and Keith Webber.
