Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
A brilliant possible end to the series
Uncharted 4 is the fourth and possibly last installment to the highly successful Naughty Dog series. It takes players on an incredible journey with everyone’s favourite character Nathan Drake. The story of this long awaited adventure takes us all around the world looking for famous pirate Henry Avery’s treasure worth around 400 million dollars. We also meet Drake’s brother Sam who has been in prison in South America for years and persuades Drake to go on this adventure. We are also joined by Nathan’s two assistants, Sully and wife/reporter Elena, who we are very familiar with from previous games.
Uncharted 4 has been highly anticipated by fans of the franchise after a long wait from Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception, with only a disappointing PS Vita game for fans to try and reconnect with. Uncharted 4 certainly didn’t fail to quench their thirst, especially with it being available on PS4, allowing the game to be bigger, longer and most importantly better. With incredible graphics, a captivating story and a highly enjoyable multiplayer mode, this game did not disappoint.
We start off three years after Uncharted 3 took place, and are thrown straight into the action with you and Sam on a boat driving toward an island in a raging storm while trying to fight off multiple enemies. A good way to start the game it has to be said. Most of the games have been loosely based on true events, spinning off from the fact that Nathan is Sir Francis Drake’s ancestor and has his old notebook which he takes on his endeavours. Uncharted has always had a big parkour aspect but none quite as spectacular as A Thief’s End. With the use of two new tools, a rope and a spike prised from the bones of skeletons, you can explore even more places on the map. Exploring is a big part of this game and also probably one of the most enjoyable things to do, just stopping and taking in the incredible scenery that you are surrounded by. For example, you walk through a cave in the middle of a massive jungle and find yourself surrounded by a lost city that you then explore and find a range of different treasures and discoveries. That’s the magic of the Uncharted series - it can take you to places that leave you with your mouth open, amazed. And with such a convincing and loveable story and characters it makes you feel like you are actually there.
A massive bonus about playing it on a next gen console is that the game is able to be the longest one in the series, along with a more developed storyline and just more precious moments in the hands of Naughty Dog. The PS4 also allows for better graphics, which is certainly noticeable whilst playing. Uncharted 4 is definitely the best of the series and, I personally feel, better than similar sorts of games out there. For example, games like Tomb Raider and Batman Arkham Asylum are both great games but just don’t offer such an engaging and graphic experience that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End manages to achieve. The game ends with probably the best ending to a game I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing, with a sword fight using the actual swords that Avery and Tew, the two pirates that fought thousands of years before this used to kill each other.... oh and did I mention that it’s on a burning ship full of treasure? Once this encounter is finished there is a small hint at possibly another game. But maybe without Nathan Drake which would frankly be a crime to the franchise.
In conclusion I feel that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is a brilliant possible end to the series and by far the best out the four thrilling games which is really saying something considering the standards set by past games. I also feel that gameplay-wise it’s the most captivating game currently available for purchase on the PS4. It’s fair to say I would recommend trying it even if you haven’t played the previous games.
Sony have reduced the price of Uncharted 4 from £44.99 to £34.99 until July 11th.
