The Nightingales: a b(r)and apart
Yes, they're still around. Now with their own record label!
The Nightingales are a band apart. Oh wait, perhaps it’s better to say they’re a brand apart nowadays. Haven’t you heard? They launched their own independent label recently. Not just for being convenient when it comes to launching a new album or finding money to raise a new gig; apparently they were fed up with big music labels after being dumped for the fourth time, so they just decided to release their new LP – For Fucks Sake – on their own terms.
The band’s name should be familiar, and by this we're not referencing the faction in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Google it: it's an indulgent game ref). No, the reason why you must’ve heard of this band before is because they have been around now since 1979, when the band was formed by the former members of The Prefects. After enjoying a well-earned cult status in the early 80s, the band got known for a bunch of critically acclaimed singles and three albums. In the late 80s they decided quit, only to re-group in 2004.
The band with their current line up, featuring Lloyd, Apperley, Andreas Schmidt and Fliss Kitson, has been more productive than ever. We like to think it's the injection of local talent from the aforementioned Fliss. One-time member of duo group, violet violet and now massive Outline favourites, There's Someone in the Pond, she was recruited by the cult favourites a couple of years back now.
Since 2004 they have released five 7” singles, a 10” EP and four studio albums. The touring bus seems to have become their new habitat, as have stages of different festivals. Now the band wants to set on this successful trend by releasing their latest LP ‘For Fucks Sake’ on their own terms, on their own label. The new album will be a limited edition of 600 copies and will be available for pre-order up until 9 April 2014, after which it will only be available at Nightingales gigs.
If you want to get your hands on the latest album of the Nightingales, you don’t even have to walk far. On April 9th, they will be coming to the Norwich Arts Centre. The same day they will release their new album. It sounds like it’s definitely going to be worth it!
