The Maccabees - Marks To Prove It
9/10
After three years The Maccabees return with a bang. They last played Norwich last December at Norwich Arts Centre as a celebration to mark NAC’s being named the NME’s UK’s Best Small Venue. Expectations are high for their new album after the gorgeous Given To The Wild was released in 2012. You know that this album has hit the ball out of the indie ballpark from the first pluck of the bass and the punchy drum beat echo on opening track Marks To Prove It. Silence and River Song show how the band have developed, oozing maturity and tranquillity. The highlight of the album is most definitely the single Something Like Happiness, the choral chanting making for a tune that soars higher than any arms potentially raised at future gigs of theirs, capturing a feeling of communal cheerfulness. With the crescendos in Dawn Chorus that settle the dust Marks To Prove It creates, you find yourself completely dazed and shocked at how successfully The Maccabees have returned to the music scene. Looking for an album to “ease you and comfort” your way into eternal indie bliss? Look no further.
