The 1975 - Notes On A Conditional Form
“Notes On A Conditional Form” (“NOACF”) is the fourth record from the alternative behemoth The 1975. Whilst the band came to fame festival ready bangers like “Chocolate” and “Sex”, “NOACF” marks a more experimental chapter. It is a musical stream of consciousness delving deep into the curious brain of Matty Healy.
“A Conditional Form” is the perfect title, as it doesn’t pose one solidified agenda. Every track switches dramatically covering politics, the environment, mental health, religion, philosophy, cam-sex and everything in between.
Matty often vocalises that he doesn’t want his band to be pigeonholed and NOACF is anything but that. The cluster-fuck of genres includes heavy punk screamer “People”, the 80s pop euphoria of “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know), and the pulsating Berlin techno of “I Think There’s Something You Should Know” and “Having No Head”. There’s even an acoustic folk crooner featuring the delightful Phoebe Bridgers, “Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America” sounding like an off cut of Bon Iver’s “For Emma Forever Ago”. The only path seemingly not crossed is reggae.
The record is unadulterated chaos, lacking in cohesion and with a slightly overlong playtime. Overall however, “NOACF” is a fascinating multi-faceted powerhouse representing the tumultuous meanderings of the human mind.
