Sean Paul – Tomahawk Technique (Atlantic Records)
SHONNAPOL!! Sean Paul is at his best when he’s summoning the unstoppable rhythms of dancehall music, causing booties across the globe to give the junk inside they trunks a heft reshuffle. Songs like ‘Body’ and ‘Roll Wid Di Don’ hit the mark by doing just that – infectious beats are integrated with Sean Paul’s fast-paced ragga chat. It’s when he diverts from the script that we have a problem. To be honest, Mr Paul can save himself a job – a lot of the songs on ‘Tomahawk Technique’ are too concerned with melody and sentiment, which doesn’t play to his strengths; we can do without singing, choruses and spare the emotion, making ‘Dream Girl’ and ‘Hold On’ redundant to the cause. He peppers the LP with a couple of heavyweights, recruiting DJ Ammo on the pumped up ‘Touch the Sky’, a surefire gym motivational track, and Dame Kelly of Outstanding Fitness Rowland on ‘How Deep is Your Love’, which shows he should hand over the melody line to the real vocalists. The album has also spawned the singles, ‘Got 2 Luv U’, an obvious hit with its featuring of Roc Nation starlet Alexis Jordan and catchy ‘She Doesn’t Mind’, which is sure to instigate dancefloor fleeting romances across the horny stratosphere.
