Ry X - Dawn

Ry X - Dawn

Ry X possesses a reflective, emotional and completely irresistible sound. Adopting a similar style to Bon Iver, this Australian songbird and musician’s debut album Dawn is a real eye opener as to what this talent has to offer and truly is a masterpiece.

Although the album has been a long time coming, with his well-known track Berlin released back in 2013, this album is in no way disappointing. There’s a clear consistent flow between songs, and the interlude which kicks this 12 track debut off serves its purpose well, by setting a tone to the rest of the album. Saying this, whether it be genre or style, there are aspects which suggest Ry X might be a one trick pony. The songs are impressive and easy to listen to, but lack grit and diversity. There are clear stand out tracks on this album for me, including Only and Deliverance, both combining a soft Jeff Buckley style, careless yet controlled, with modern day influences from the likes of artists like Sohn.

All in all, the album is good. He’s musically talented, there’s no doubt about it, but if you’re looking for an artist who goes outside of the comfort zone to experiment with his own abilities and voice then maybe he isn’t the artist for you.
