Prawn - Run

Prawn - Run

Prawn established themselves as one of the more interesting acts to emerge from the “emo revival” scene of the early 2010’s, and their latest offering Run is a shining example of why. “There’s goodwill in my devil’s skin, I hope it’s enough” vocalist and guitarist Tony Clark sings on opener Hunter, establishing the album’s themes of seclusion and the relationships we hold with the people around us. On Rooftops, a song about the trials of living in a city, Clark states “I can’t stand this place any more than you can”; these motifs of isolation and anxieties give Run a powerful, emotional undercurrent.

Prawn are also one of the most diverse bands in emo in terms of their musicianship. The production and the decision to remove the brass and string elements of 2014’s Kingfisher gives Run a raw and visceral feeling. Leopard’s Paw takes influence from This Will Destroy You-esque post-rock, whilst Snake Oil Salesman”channels the frantic punk spirit of Snowing and Algernon Cadwallader.

With the exception of a few unremarkable tracks (i.e. Empty Hands), Run displays Prawn at their most mature and compelling, and cements their place as one of the frontrunners in the modern emo scene.
