Martin John Henry – The Other Half of Everything (Gargleblast Records)
Ah dae like a sang sung en a Scortesh ucksent! Yeah, I’m the King of phonetics… (Sorry anyone reading this who’s Scottish).
But terrible Irvine Welsh impersonations aside, this is a damned fine album, with hints of fellow Scots Frightened Rabbit with occasional electro poppery thrown in for good measure. The Other Half of Everything was produced by Andy Miller, who’s worked with the likes of Mogwai and Scout Niblett and, indeed, Mogwai have been quoted as stating that Henry’s previous band, De Rosa, have been of great influence to them. High praise indeed.
And that praise is, I think, very well deserved if The Other Half of Everything is anything to go by. This is a beautiful and ambitious album that’s a bit folky, a bit electro, a bit post-rock and a bit good. It’s delicate and powerful, progressive but not pretentious, deep and also fun. It’s an impressive achievement and an impressive record.
“I’m used to regret”, Henry sings on Seventh Song, and you will be too if you don’t buy this album.
