LUH - Spiritual Songs For Lovers To Sing
6.5/10
LUH (that’s Lost Under Heaven) have been stirring intrigue for some time now; a track or two here, a sprinkling of images there, and even a pretty meaty manifesto surfacing online. Yes, that’s right. But now we have an actual factual album to delve into and, if you can make peace with how up itself this whole multimedia barn dance revolution is, there’s something fairly interesting here.
Leading single I&I is a wise opener, rotating back on itself over and over, gathering momentum with each choral swing before finally catapulting the record forward. What awaits is an hour of Ellery Roberts’ muddied, unwavering growl pummelling through a bunch of deep indie anthems. Partner/artist Ebony Hoorn shows her understated power every now and then, and the album cries out for more tracks like the crawling Future Blues. After this the inexplicably clubby $ORO is too deliberate and shocks things out of rhythm to detrimental effect, kicking down the door like a lairy mate you can’t remember inviting.
LUH clearly have a lot to say but this isn’t yet the rousing call to arms they want it to be. A little more time, a little more clarity, perhaps they’ll get there.
