Inhaler - It Won’t Always Be Like This

Inhaler are an Irish rock band, made up of four people. After their debut was delayed due to Covid, it’s out now and it’s called It Won’t Always Be Like this. An interesting fact about the band is that vocalist/guitarist Eilijah Hewson is the son of Bono - yes, the Bono from U2! The musical talent clearly runs in the genes, as the band were included in music’s prestigious prediction list run by the BBC's Sound of 2020.

The title track gets the album off to a seriously synth-based sound, which is unlike the majority of the album. Also, the song reminded me of some of Bombay Bicycle Club’s work such as Shuffle. That’s a compliment from me. I also love this song in particular because it is one of the slightly more upbeat, feel-good songs because of the synths. By contrast, Totally is a more emotional song from the album: the lyrics say, “Why does it hurt me so much?”.

Some of the tunes they’ve released on It Won’t Always Be Like this are a bit slower. For instance, My King Will Be Kind is a bit slower than the song just mentioned, albeit for the drum part, in the same way that some of the stuff by The Verve is. Another example of a song that does this is Who’s Your Money On? (Plastic House).

The band are great at writing, singing and producing catchy choruses, with repetitive riffs. It’s a trick they’ve used very effectively on the album again and again.

Although I’m still new to their work, this album has definitely wanted to make me see them live. It’s a success if an album does that, isn’t it? I can imagine crowds enjoying them - the choruses will be enjoyable for people to sing along to at gigs. An example of one particular song on the album song that is singalong worthy is When It Breaks.

This album is a must-listen for any fellow indie aficionados like me. You will love it if you love Royal Blood, Arctic Monkeys, and Catfish and the Bottlemen.
