Garrett Millerick

Comedian Garrett Millerick, who has been called the “world’s angriest optimist”, performed at The Garage last night in Norwich. We were apprehensive about this as this was both our first time reviewing a comedy show, but we thought why not give it a go while the legendary Millerick was in town. The comedian himself has been on; Conan, SiriusXM, 800 Pound Gorilla Records & The Laughable Podcast (50 Funniest Podcasts of 2021 – Guardian) to just name a few.

Neither of us had been to The Garage before, but we were welcomed by friendly staff and the drinks selection at the bar was great! (We highly recommend the Kinder cards chocolate, they’re delicious). The night started off with Garrett entertaining the stage with full energy, the audience all too scared to sit in the first two front rows (us included), with the fear of being the butt of a joke. Garrett got everyone from the back to move to the front, although this was obviously not part of the performance you could really start to see his funny personality coming through.

While we don’t want to spoil the jokes that were made, expect Covid hilarities, political nonsense, and the tales of how Greta Thungberg and Margaret Thatcher are comparable. His show was strongly centred around Britain, it’s downfall and many of the negative current affairs, which suited his built up anger in his tone of voice and comedic delivery.

Although a slightly small crowd, there were many laughs in the audience. Many generations had gathered at this event, we both found some of the jokes linked to more dated events flew over our heads, but the audience members who had an extra 10 years plus on us enjoyed these colloquialisms and mentions of laughable past times. The same could be said for the older member of the audience too; especially when social media, more specifically, Twitter was mentioned and the focus of an anecdote.

Norwich’s venue of The Garage fuelled some jokes, as he reappeared after the interval with some hilarious comparisons of the green room, to some less appealing locations.

His voice wavered between shouting and toned-down speaking right into the microphone throughout the evening, which mixed nicely between stories and jokes. His volume added a lot to each jokes as he progressed through the evening and proved his title of “world’s angriest optimist” to be in fact, correct.

Garrett informed us that after his show he would be appearing on ‘Times Radio’ to speak about the show and more specifically us as an audience, which made for a livelier atmosphere. Comedic timing to perfection in our opinion, as he thanked us for coming along and wavering away from the classic ‘You’ve been an amazing audience’, he told us ‘Norwich, you’ve been weird’. Short and blunt delivery that entertained, leaving us on a high after his show.

Huge credit to Garret Millerick for a wonderful show! It’s always great to try different experiences and have the chance to review such a wide range of performances and arts. Best of luck to him for the remainder of his UK tour and upcoming show!
