Charlie Simpson – Young Pilgrim (PIAS)

Former Busted member and current frontman of alt-rock band Fightstar Charlie Simpson is back with his debut full-length, Young Pilgrim. Released on August 15th, despite the devastating fires that destroyed 30,000 copies of the album in the PIAS warehouse during the London riots, the album has had a warm reception and even entered the UK album charts at number 6. Simpson has so far proved he is able to switch genres in an instant from playing pop tunes in a boy band to performing some killer rock songs with his band Fightstar. This album only further shows the guy's talent as he knocks out some fantastically warm acoustic pop songs with a hint of a folk style. The melodic tunes of ‘Parachutes’, ‘Cemetery’ and ‘I Need A Friend Tonight’ lean more towards an indie rock style whereas ‘Thorns’ & ‘If I lose It’ lend themselves more to a Coldplay-like sound. Each song brings with it hints of different genres and its own set of emotion and feeling which is really what makes this album special. Overall it has a very chilled-out summery feel and is an album that is perfect to listen to over and over.  Fans of Frank Turner would find this a good listen.
