Celebration City

Celebration City

HOT TOWN, summer in the city… yes, we’re sticky & sweaty, so it must be July, and if it is July, then it’s time to celebrate a month where it might not rain ice for a few consecutive days so being outside isn’t automatically awful. Let’s revel in it by celebrating outdoors as much as possible.

First up on from Friday 7th , we have the weekend of the Lord Mayors Celebrations, the annual opportunity to cheer on a lot of people waving at us from the back of HGVs before heading off to ooh and ah at the fireworks. Except that this year there are TONS of other events going on all weekend, including a special BBC Introducing stage in Chapelfield Gardens on Saturday 8th, as well as the promisingly named ‘water balloon toss’ on St Peters Street. Shepherded into the fold of LMC this year, Sunday 9th sees the return of the Norwich Lanes Fayre with all the pop up performances we expect, the street market, music, art, and about as much Norwichiness as can be crammed into one corner of the finest of cities. Expect it to be crazy mad popular after it skipped last year – we’ll forgive it though, because we’re nice like that.

Not as nice as the people who organise Norwich Pride though, which will be back on Saturday 29th. Promising an inclusive, friendly, creative and all round just really lovely atmosphere, they want to promote their mission to ensure that Norwich is a city where everyone can feel safe and proud to be themselves. There will be stalls, a parade, stage show and a chance to show the city at its best, celebrating the fact that this is a city that will always do different, and that’s why we love it.

If massed crowds aren’t your thing, create your own mini Norwich celebration. Hand out ice lollies to people waiting for the bus. Smile at everyone in the street. Offer free hugs to people outside The Forum. Show this city and the people of it a bit of sweaty summer love, you beauties.
