Breathless - 'Green to Blue'

I’ve always been a bit wary of double CDs, they always make me think that what’s on them is going to be drawn out and self indulgent, so when I opened up the cellophane on Breathless’ new album to discover two discs I wasn’t exactly filled with hope for the material contained on them.

Slipping disc one into the player, it became obvious fairly quickly that my preconceptions about the double-disc format were not going to be overcome with ‘Green to Blue’. This is by no means a bad record, the stark melancholy of some of the tracks is really quite beautiful, but there are also moments where it’s too involved with its own existence, almost screaming out “LOOK AT HOW CONCEPTUAL I AM!”, which is annoying at best, and spoils those parts of the album that are genuinely moving. That said, I’m certain there are certain members of the Prog. fanbase that will absolutely lap up every reverb drenched note of it.

There are some really lovely songs on this album, there’s just too damned much of it and I can’t help but think everyone would have been better off had it been split in two and released as separate albums 8 months apart.

6/10 BBV
