Bloxx - Lie Out Loud
Bloxx’s long-awaited debut album ‘Lie Out Loud’ perfectly showcases their range as a band. Moving away from the label of being ‘just’ an indie-pop band, Bloxx have proved that they are capable of so much more. From grungy-rock to dreamy-pop, this album ventures into new genres. Old favourites such as ‘Go Out with You’ are combined with the perfect amount of new material, taking the listener on a journey through theirmusic evolution.
The album opens and closes with two powerful, rock-influenced tracks, ‘Lie Out Loud’ and ‘Swimming’, giving it a cyclical feel. The unapologetic lyrics and heavy bass embody the emotional turmoil that comes from being in a relationship.
Continuing with this grungy, heavier sound, the band describe ‘Thinking About Yourself’ as a bit of ‘a f*ck you song’ for people who think the world revolves around them – serving as an emotional release. ‘Off My Mind’ remains a favourite for me, its adrenaline-fuelled chorus giving it that feel-good indie-pop sound that first drew me to the band. Frontwoman Fee has commented that it’s the most intimate record she’s written, and this is evident from its in-depth, vulnerable lyricism.
The track that stands out most for me is definitely ‘Changes’. The gentle guitar riffs give it a dreamlike feel, along with the combination of its upbeat, catchy chorus with the more melancholy lyrics, ‘we’re becoming strangers’.
Bloxx have been compared to the likes of ‘Wolf Alice’ or ‘Dream Wife’, however I think that in their debut they have truly come into their own, demonstrating their unique sound as a band. This has left me (and I’m sure many fans) feeling excited about what they will do next.
