Beach House - Depression Cherry

Almost a decade on since they emerged with their first album, Depression Cherry is a fresh and confident example of Beach House’s distinctive sound; making it clear that they are here to define rather than develop. Victoria Legrand’s ghostly vocals return with renewed energy that flows through the album with a beautiful and unique ease; matched perfectly by the brooding moans of the guitar from the other half of the dream-pop duo, Alex Scally. Despite the feeling that this album is just another take on their instantly recognisable sound, the vocals in this album feel a lot more intimate and songs such as Space Song and PPP save this from being mistaken as a mere extension of Bloom. Something also needs to be said for the stunning song titles and lyrics in this album; the husky vocals of Legrand ooze through lyrics such as ‘they take the simple things inside you and put nightmares in your hands’ in Beyond Love, conjuring a lethargic but strikingly beautiful atmosphere. For Beach House this album doesn’t reveal anything new and isn’t dissimilar to past albums, but it succeeds in providing fans with more of the dreamy and relaxing sounds that they do so well.
